Ready, Steady, Get Naked.
Sea Point in Cape Town will be the starting point for the annual Cape Town Naked Bike Ride this Saturday, 11 March, and even if you don’t quite dare to bare it all, you can put on a hat and join for a good cause.
The theme this year will be ‘Bare as you dare!’ and even if you do decide to wear a tuxedo, you’re still welcome.

Organiser, Juanita Pretorius, insists that it’s not just all about people flashing skin, but rather a way for people to express themselves and raise awareness for positive body images, a safer cycling experience in Cape Town, as well as clean energy and sustainability. We agree, nothing says clean energy like riding your bicycle in the buff.
“It’s actually a protest against global warming and fossil fuels and things like that… we just want to protect our environment… it’s actually to raise awareness to protect something like Earth and you’re (being) body positive, and people positive, and planet positive.”
Participants also don’t have to have a bicycle to join in the fun, and skateboards, rollerblades, shopping trolleys and pretty much anything with wheels are welcome.
It is a fun way to network with people who want to make the world a better place.
Saturday’s event will form part of global ‘nude cycling events’ that are held in major cities to raise awareness. The inaugural ride was in 2004, and since then it has become quite popular.
This might be the only opportunity outside of Afrika Burn where you get to ride your bike naked, but I just keep thinking about all the chaffing…
