One of the world’s longest and most luxurious ships, the Queen Mary 2, has docked in the Durban harbour, and the local who’s who laid out the red carpet for the boat.
The QE2 has 950 crew members and 2 000 passengers, and once served as a British ocean liner from 1969 to 2008. Since April 18, 2018, it has been operating as a floating hotel in Dubai.
The 294-metre-long ship has a gross weight of 70 327 tons and can reach a top speed of 32,5 knots (60,2 kilometres/hour).
The top suites are designed to accomodate up to four people, and at $160,000 (R2.8 million) is the highest for any shipboard accommodations available today. It applies to each suite for a 90‐day cruise to the Orient sailing from New York
The QE2 has always received a warm welcome whenever she docks, with the floating hotel being met by Zulu Reed dancers as well as Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda on hand to welcome the tourists and crew to Durban.
During the engagement, Mayor Kaunda highlighted Durban as a premier destination to passengers. He also handed over a gift to the ship’s Captain Andrew Hall
SA People reports that the visitors were treated to rickshaw rides and a tour of all the special sights of the city and surroundings. Have a look at the over-the-top sailboat below:
