There’s one day of the week that can be pretty deadly when it comes to matters of the heart.
A scientific study has found that people have a greater chance of a serious heart attack occurring on a Monday than at any other time. The study found that the likelihood of a heart attack occurring on this bluesy day was 13% greater than expected.
The interesting thing is that people are already conditioned to hate this day of the week, so this research is really just adding fuel to the fire and insult to injury.
Doctors at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland analysed data from 10 528 patients across the island of Ireland, The Independent reported, who had been admitted to hospital between 2013 and 2018 with the most serious type of heart attack.
That is an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), which takes place when a major coronary artery is completely blocked. According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) there are more than 30 000 hospital admissions due to STEMI each year in the UK.
To minimise damage to the heart, the attack requires emergency assessment and treatment normally performed with emergency angioplasty – a procedure to reopen the blocked coronary artery.
The researchers found a spike in STEMI heart attacks at the start of the working week, with rates highest on a Monday.
I wonder if it also has something to do with folks being a little more lenient on the weekends, drinking and eating all the treats that they stopped themselves from chowing in the week.
It could also just be the stress of going back to work, and responsibilities. As the cardiologist said, it’s definitely multifactorial.
Jeez, talk about the Monday Blues.
