Racing 92 owner Jacky Lorenzetti got personal in his public criticism of Siya Kolisi after the team’s semi-final defeat to Bordeaux-Begles over the weekend.
Lorenzetti claimed that Kolisi’s performance was ‘transparent’ and that the Springbok captain was overweight.
The Racing owner went on to say that he believes the hand injury the Springbok sustained in March, and subsequent surgery, was something that he has not yet recovered from. He does, however, have faith that Kolisi will come good next season, with the club set to be further bolstered by the arrival of former England captain Owen Farrell.
“He had a remarkable start to the season, where he was a unifier off the field,” he said in the interview.
“The break was harmful to him. He gained weight, lost form and yesterday he was transparent.
Lorenzetti picked apart another trophy-less season for the Parisians, and the 83-cap Springbok was not the only Racing player on the receiving end. Josua Tuisova of Fiji, another recent addition, was also criticised and charged with failing to produce the desired results following his arrival from Lyon.
“We have to be clear—he didn’t bring anything.”
The Fijian’s knee injury sustained at the World Cup forced him to miss six months of action before making his debut in May, so, understandably, he hasn’t been able to get back to his destructive self right away.
Siya’s arrival in Paris was accompanied by much hype and even more hope. South Africa’s two-times World Cup-winning captain Siya Kolisi has, however, ended his first campaign with the French club trophyless.
The veteran No. 8 has struggled with minor injuries recently and will miss South Africa’s Test against Wales on Saturday as well due to his club commitments. But if anybody knows how to stage a comeback, it’s Siya.
