Although the second season of The Last Of Us is only scheduled to air in 2025, HBO has given fans of the game-turned-TV series a sneak peek at what we can expect from the upcoming second instalment.
Based on the video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog, the series is set twenty years into a pandemic caused by a mass fungal infection, which causes its hosts to transform into zombie-like creatures and collapse society.
The second season, based on the 2020 game The Last of Us Part II, follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in the aftermath of the first season and introduces Abby (Kaitlyn Dever).
Show co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann also revealed that the second run of The Last of Us will span seven episodes. Although less than the first season, the writers claim that this “is not because we’re taking less time to tell the stories”.
“The story that we’re telling [in season two] is much bigger than the story of season one, there’s just a lot more going on. It’s a lot harder to produce, but we want every episode to feel like its own blockbuster, to be honest with you”.
HBO renewed The Last of Us for a second season less than two weeks after the first season premiered in January 2023, and with all the praise the first season received the follow-up is guaranteed to be a hit for the studio.
Of course, since the series is based on a video game, many people know what will happen next if The Last of Us season two follows the narrative of the game’s sequel.
So, if you’re a fan of the game, please don’t spoil it for your mates.
