More than six decades after the killing of President John F. Kennedy, never-before-seen footage of the assassination’s immediate aftermath has come to light.
The minute-long, 8mm colour film is now being auctioned off by online bidding site RR Auction and the live auction is scheduled for September 28.
The two segments of the recovered tape show the president’s motorcade travelling through downtown Dallas and then accelerating in the direction of Parkland Hospital while both the president and Jackie Kennedy are protected by Secret Service member Clint Hill.
The former Secret Service Agent. now 92, says that seeing the video after all this time was “an emotional thing”.
“The discovery of the film is an emotional thing for me because I know what has happened. I know what I’m seeing in that film is a dead president.”
Dale Carpenter Sr., a truck driver from Dallas who lives nearby, took the video from Stemmons Freeway. James Gates, the grandson of Carpenter, told PEOPLE that his mother gave him family heirlooms shortly after his grandpa passed away from Parkinson’s illness, which is how the movie ended up in his possession.
RR Auction executive vice president, Bobby Livingston, says the unique footage is a part of American history.“She gave me several reels of family films and audio recordings, a projector and the reel-to-reel audio recorder. The film was stored in a plastic Dean Foods milk crate and had been in my closet for several years before I decided to put it in a fire safe.”
“Unlike any other footage known to exist, this film captures a segment immediately following the Zapruder film, providing a fresh perspective on one of the most analyzed moments in history.”
“Once you see it, you’ll never forget Clint Hill’s heroic efforts to protect Mrs. Kennedy, racing at 80 miles an hour in a desperate attempt to save the president’s life as they sped to Parkland.”
On November 22, 1963, at approximately 12:30 p.m., local time, President John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a motorcade with his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy, Texas Governor John Connally, and his wife, Nelly Connally.
Footage taken on the day by various bystanders and news crews has become some of the most combed-over films in history as conspiracy theories on the assassination swirled for the last 60 years.
Although several still photos and home movies of JFK’s Dallas motorcade are known – the most famous being the Zapruder film, shot on similar 8mm silent colour home-movie stock – very little exists that documents the aftermath of the shooting or the race to Parkland Hospital.
Prior to the discovery of this film, the only known imagery of Kennedy’s limousine on North Stemmons Freeway were three still photographs, also captured by spectators along the route
As per the RR Auctions website, there have so far been three bids on the video, with the top bid at $12,100.
