SANParks Rangers have paid tribute to Ben, the K9 patroller who died this weekend after being attacked by a crocodile in the park.
Ben was conducting an exercise with his handler, which he had partnered with for eight years when he was attacked while quenching his thirst at a riverbank.
While nearby rangers made various attempts to save the animal, their efforts were futile, and Ben lost his life from the injuries.
The SANParks Honorary Rangers have also issued a statement on the problems that these animals and rangers encounter on the job.
“Committed to preserving our precious wildlife, the K9 units and their handlers face numerous challenges, often placing themselves in danger to safeguard these lands. This loss reminds us of the bravery and sacrifice involved in protecting our precious natural heritage.”
“His legacy in safeguarding our wildlife will be remembered, and his absence will be felt deeply. Our sincere condolences go to the handler, the team, and everyone who had the privilege of working alongside Ben.”
Ben was a committed supporter of SANParks’ anti-poaching initiatives. According to The Citizen, team members who have worked with Ben rate him as one of the finest at tracking poachers.
There are currently a total of 58 dogs in our national parks which play a vital role in both counter-poaching and in certain parks, visitor safety.
Project Watchdog manages all canine-related Honorary Ranger activities in the national parks and raises funds that support the K9 Anti-Poaching unit.
Any donations made towards K9 Project Watchdog go towards looking after these dogs to ensure that they receive care of the highest possible standard to support the vital work they do. If you would like to donate, please visit their website at SanParksVolunteers.
