Jassis, Yaz. This is a full-blown mess.
In what appears to be a massive “oops” moment from pharmaceutical giant Bayer, a batch of Yaz Plus contraceptive pills is being recalled due to a packaging “mix-up” that could, you know, compromise its birth control effectiveness and lead to unwanted pregnancies.
Apparently, a “limited number” of packs were mistakenly filled with 24 hormone-free placebo pills—those delightful “sugar” pills intended only to remind you to keep taking your real contraceptive – instead of the 24 actual hormone tablets used for contraception.
AKA, as radio and TV personality Dan Corder says, the real days are the skipped days and the skipped days are the real days. Meaning: loads of people are going to be making babies who are trying NOT to make babies.
News24 confirmed the recall with Bayer and Sahpra:
“In close consultation with the South African Health Products Authority (Sahpra), Bayer has initiated a Class II, Type A recall for the Yaz Plus tablets batch identified as WEW96J, with an expiry date of March 2026,” the medical director for Bayer’s pharmaceuticals division Dr Naren Jairam said on Thursday.
“This measure was taken following a discovery of a packaging mix-up in a limited number of packs which could potentially compromise the product’s contraceptive efficacy.
“A formal and detailed public statement will be published in alignment with guidelines from Sahpra. This statement will provide additional information on the recall process”.
A copy of a letter by Bayer to healthcare professionals was shared on social media on Thursday night.
Yikes.
Bayer might be dealing with a few lawsuits from sudden parents whose little miracle was brought to them by Yaz Plus.
