Coca-Cola is finding itself on everyone’s naughty list after its 2024 Christmas commercial was slammed for the use of Artificial Intelligence.
Attempting to bring back the magic of years past with its AI-generated Christmas spots, the company wanted to recreate its iconic 1995 “Holidays Are Coming” Christmas ads by commissioning three artificial intelligence studios to produce them using generative AI.
The results left internet users feeling anything but merry, with the spots featuring distorted proportions and unsettling facial expressions that are just a bit off.
Forbes even speculated the latter blunder may have been why Santa didn’t appear in the ads. One can only imagine the horror images AI produced for Santa.
Who needs the ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ when we have the fever dreams of AI?”
Internet users didn’t hold back, lamenting the loss of human creativity, and even jobs.
“Feels painfully ironic that they’re using ‘real magic’ as a slogan while making the fakest, most talentless ad of all time.”
“Coca Cola using AI for an ad is genuinely so terrifying to me. Art is dying.”
“Actors, replaced. Camera workers, replaced. Drivers, replaced. Designers, replaced.”

Other commenters on X thought it was ironic that Coca-Cola featured polar bears in the ads, pointing out how AI data centres and servers are horrible for the environment, consuming vast amounts of freshwater and are projected to gobble up as much electricity as some small countries.
As far as AI videos go, we have to admit it’s not as bad as it can get. Perhaps the anger directed at Coca-Cola is wasted on a ‘trivial’ thing like using AI in a Christmas advert.
Besides the unsettling facial expressions, notice the use of glass bottles in all Coca-Cola adverts, whereas the majority of their caramel-coloured phosphoric acid is sold in plastic bottles. When will the beverage company begin releasing honest adverts that show sea turtles choking on their bottle caps or the islands of plastic waste in our oceans?
The biggest gripe with Coca-Cola should be their ‘washing our hands’ policy of insisting the responsibility to recycle is purely on the shoulders of consumers. When are you going to start picking up your shit from our beaches and oceans, Coca-Cola?
