Pornhub has flung the duvet off global X-rated viewing habits, baring it all with a list of 2024’s top search terms—yup, the NSFW streamer has eyes on you!
In their latest expose of ahem dirty data, released Tuesday, the steamy standout was “hentai,” which claimed the crown as the most-searched term worldwide, beating out classics like “MILF,” “lesbian,” and “anal”, with one kink an expert cheekily described as “less complicated” also getting in there.
Hentai—Japanese anime that’s as explicit as it is artistic—had its moment in the spotlight this year, nabbing the top search spot in the US for the first time. But Americans weren’t the only ones captivated by the risqué cartoon genre; it also dominated in Brazil and even wartorn Ukraine, proving that hentai’s appeal knows no borders.
Meanwhile, “MILF” continued its reign in other frisky frontiers like the UK, Canada, and Spain, because some classics just never go out of style.
And in a curveball twist, Pornhub reported a 72% global surge in searches for “tradwives.” For the uninitiated, a tradwife is a modern-day retro queen, ditching the corporate grind in favour of perfecting the art of domesticity—think cooking, cleaning, and child-rearing, with a side of social media savvy.
These tradwives, often embracing a submissive role and striving to cater to their husband’s every whim, have been making waves in mainstream discourse—fueled in part by a flurry of TikTok videos glamorising the lifestyle, a la the abortion rights debate happening in America right now.
Interestingly, the spike in tradwife searches seemed to align with a broader fascination for all things “demure,” which saw a jaw-dropping 133% surge after a TikTok trend about being “demure and mindful” went viral. Jeez these word sneaks in everywhere, hey?
And the coy movement didn’t stop there—searches for “modesty” rose 77%, while the intriguingly specific term “modest MILF” crept up 45%, proving that sometimes a little subtlety can spark a lot of curiosity.
Dr Laurie Betito, who serves as the director of Pornhub’s Sexual Wellness Center says “It seems people may be pining for a simpler time — looking for things that are less complicated and maybe seeking out more meaningful experiences.”
And then you get the “hawk tuah” phenomenon – which references an explicit sex act that’s far from demure, mindful or modest — that also saw significant gains in searches. The onomatopoeic word went viral after Hayley Welch spat at a mic during an interview on the streets of Nashville earlier this year.
Fascinatingly, the frisky data also revealed that women may enjoy watching gay porn. Gay pornstar Dom King was searched 468% more by women than by men.
