What a beautiful moment to stumble upon.

Lion sightings are quite common in the stunning landscape of Kruger National Park, but capturing a cub’s birth is very rare. Fortunately, one game ranger was in the right place at the right time.

A while back, Mrisho Lugenge and his companions stumbled upon a pregnant lioness, who was pacing back and forth. They immediately realised why the animal was acting strangely when the lioness laid down and shifted her body to a more comfortable posture.

Amazed, they watched the lioness’ belly contract as she went into labour, but a few moments later, the lioness stood up, with a baby in her mouth.

Lungenge and his guests quickly removed themselves from the sighting in order to respect the space of the new mother and cub as lions tend to be more on guard and stressed when a cub is born.

Still, what a special moment to stumble upon.

Lionesses usually give birth in a special hiding place as the cubs are born blind and helpless. After the birth, the mother will move them to another site because the scent of blood and new birth will attract predators to her young.

They give birth to cubs all year round, usually from the age of about three or four years old.
