It’s about to get intense for Joel and Ellie as The Last of Us returns for its explosive second season in April.

Season 2 kicks off with a five-year jump: Joel and Ellie find themselves clashing with each other and a world far more deadly than before. Expect betrayal, secrets, and shocking twists.

Revealed at SXSW, the trailer features Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) sharing a quiet moment dancing, only for the tension to build as Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) strides through the snow, cold as ice, and on a mission. Hinting at tensions between the leading characters, the trailer ends with Ellie seething at Joel (Pedro Pascal): “You swore.”

Alongside Pascal, Ramsey, and Merced, new faces this season include Kaitlyn Dever, Jeffrey Wright, and Catherine O’Hara, joining the cast for a journey that promises betrayal, heartbreak, and a world that’s more dangerous than ever.

Also noteworthy: a previous teaser dropped on September 26 — Joel’s birthday and the anniversary of the Cordyceps outbreak. HBO marked the occasion with new artwork by Greg Ruth, which you can check out below.

In another teaser released in August, Joel confesses to an unexpected character, Catherine O’Hara, telling her, “I saved her” — a moment diverging from the game’s original storyline. Fans will also recognize a cliffhanger scene from the end of The Last of Us Part II, indicating big changes are on the horizon.

Get ready for an unforgettable ride. Season 2 of The Last of Us premieres on April 13.
