Move over, pineapple, it’s time for another citrus fruit as Orange Pizza becomes Australia’s latest gift to the world.
Family-owned pizza chain Bubba Pizza has poked the hornet’s nest by launching a Ham and Orange Pizza in Assie land in an apparent nod to Italy’s love of oranges.
Italians can reportedly try it for free by showing their Italian passports in any of Bubba Pizza’s 15 stores across Australia, while those without passports and non-Italians can score a freebie simply by wearing orange. Naturally, opinions have been split over the extreme move, but it was interesting to note that
Tony Fazio, an Italian pizza maestro who developed Bubba Pizza’s iconic dough recipe, has thrown his support behind the new creation.
“As an Italian, I was skeptical at first,” Fazio said. “But the ham and orange pizza is a game-changer. It balances the tanginess of the orange with the savoury ham perfectly, and it’s a nod to the citrus flavours Italians have loved for generations.”
Bubba Pizza Managing Director Damian Hopper described the new creation as not just a new pizza but “a way to bring people together over something unexpected.”
“Aussies and Italians might have different ideas about what belongs on a pizza, but the Ham and Orange Pizza celebrates the best of both worlds. It’s fresh, it’s fun, and it’s a little bit daring.”
Did Down Under do us dirty with this one?
When it comes to the ‘most controversial’ ingredient, we must admit that oranges and pineapples are very much alike. It’s just another citrus on a slice, and we find the consistency and taste very similar once warm. Yes, we were curious as to what “hot orange” would taste like, so we air-fried the hell out of a few slices. If anything, the smell of fried citrus definitely freshens up a kitchen.
Homegrown pioneers Butler’s Pizza have always embraced the pineapple, but it will be interesting to see if oranges make their way onto the South African scene. Until then, we’ll listen to the words of Frank Zappa, who once said that a mind is like a parachute – it only works if it’s open.
Tonight, after we’ve bought a new air fryer on Takealot, we’re ordering a large Hawaiian from Butler’s, and we suggest you do the same. See it as an Ayahuasca trip for your palate.
