More than 180 motorists have already been busted for driving under the influence in the two weeks leading up to the Easter long weekend — and the roads haven’t even hit full chaos mode yet.
The Western Cape’s provincial mobility department confirmed that 183 drivers were cuffed between March 31 and April 13, a stat that, frankly, should make everyone sit up straight.
They called it a “deeply concerning reality” just days before the Easter rush kicks into high gear.
“The Easter period is traditionally marked by increased traffic volumes on Western Cape roads. We are calling on every road user to make responsible choices — whether you’re driving, walking, or cycling. One bad decision can have devastating consequences,” said mobility spokesperson Muneera Allie.
Yep, the roads are about to look like a Fast & Furious audition, and your bad choices aren’t just your own problem.
Allie also rattled off the usual suspects when it comes to crashes — driving under the influence, reckless and negligent driving, speeding, distracted driving, and good old-fashioned exhaustion. If you’re guilty of ticking more than one of those boxes, consider handing your keys to literally anyone else.
With the Easter exodus looming, the real fun begins Thursday afternoon and hits a crescendo Friday morning as sun-seekers and family visitors flood the highways. And don’t think Monday’s any better — the post-weekend homeward scramble promises to be just as wild.
“In preparing for the high travel period, the Western Cape government has offered free 10-point vehicle checks at various testing centres, providing drivers with an opportunity to have their vehicle’s fitness tested ahead of the peak travelling period,” said Allie.
Because nothing says “I love my family” like making sure your brakes actually work before you hit the N1.
The department’s also been sharpening its game, rolling out static and mobile traffic operations on all the usual suspect routes and tightening the screws on public transport checks to ensure both vehicles and their drivers are fit for duty.
So, whether you’re behind the wheel, catching a lift, or walking along the shoulder, best believe the Easter road circus is in full swing, and the traffic cops aren’t playing around.
