It’s official – Lucasfilm just dropped the hyperdrive bomb: Ryan Gosling is strapping into the Star Wars universe for a brand new standalone flick.

Yep, you read that right – the guy from Barbie is about to pilot a galaxy far, far away.

The announcement came straight from the mothership at Star Wars Celebration Tokyo, where Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy and resident Jedi of creative decisions Dave Filoni unveiled the film’s title: Star Wars: Starfighter, and slapped a May 2027 release date on it, because apparently the Force needs three years to warm up.

And Gosling? Oh, he’s feeling the space vibes. In a moment that could’ve made even a Sith tear up, he told the crowd (via Variety):

“Being here and seeing all of you [makes it] more inspiring to do it … It’s such a great reminder of how much movies can mean to us, specifically how much these movies mean to us … All we can hope for is: ‘May the fans be with us.’”

Smooth, Ryan. Even Yoda couldn’t have dropped a more wholesome soundbite.

Behind the camera, Shawn Levy’s calling the shots, fresh off his Deadpool & Wolverine victory lap, which basically printed money when it dropped in 2024. Jonathan Tropper, the pen behind Your Friends & Neighbors, is handling the script, so expect laser-sharp dialogue along with the usual pew-pew.

Levy, clearly still riding the fanboy high, told the crowd: “We’re fans, too. There’s obviously a relationship between these stories and the audience, but we’ve spent our lives in that audience. We know how meaningful it is.”

The nerds are in charge now, and they’re playing for keeps.

Kennedy had already teased the film back in February, telling Deadline it’s set “maybe five or six years” after The Rise of Skywalker — you know, the film that wrapped up the whole Skywalker family drama like a Christmas present nobody asked for.

And let’s not pretend Gosling’s casting was some well-kept secret. Rumours had been circling like TIE Fighters for months, especially since Star Wars usually dodges megawatt A-listers to avoid their star power outshining the actual starships. Word is Mikey Madison – fresh off her Oscar win for Anora – passed on playing opposite Gosling. Bold move, Madison. Bold move.

As if that wasn’t enough to make fan brains melt, Lucasfilm also dropped fresh footage from The Mandalorian and Grogu — the next chapter in the galaxy’s most adorable bounty hunter bromance, slated for May 2026.

Oh, and they confirmed Maul: Shadow Lord, an animated Disney+ series about the baddest tattooed Sith in the game, Darth Maul, slicing onto screens in 2026.

So yeah, buckle up. The Star Wars machine is firing on all cylinders, and this time, it’s got Gosling in the cockpit.
