New Netflix Crime Thriller Promises All The Fun Of A Good Whodunit [Trailer]

Apparently it is a mix of the stunning visuals and drama of 'Yellowstone' and the dark undertones of 'Ozark'.

What do you get when Yellowstone and Ozark have a gritty, gorgeous lovechild? Netflix’s new crime thriller, Untamed.

On the surface, it’s all scenic grandeur and slow-burn tension, but don’t let the beauty fool you. The teaser trailer (scroll down to watch it) makes one thing very clear: something dark is festering deep in Yosemite’s untouched wilds, and it’s about to get exposed.

The teaser kicks off with Eric Bana’s character setting the stage: even though 4 million tourists traipse through Yosemite every year, “they see maybe ten per cent of the park.”

Basically, there’s 90% of it left for secrets, skeletons, and storylines. Cue the sweeping drone shots, one very dead body, and Bana growling, “Things happen different out here.” No kidding, mate.

Bana plays Kyle Turner, a special agent with the National Parks Service’s elite enforcement division. Think less ranger with a badge, more wilderness bloodhound with a haunted past. He’s partnered up with rookie ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), and the two are plunged headfirst into a mystery soaked in murder, regret, and whatever else Yosemite’s been hiding in those dense woods.

With The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith and The Marsh King’s Daughter’s Elle Smith behind the wheel, expect plenty of nail-biting tension and the kind of twists that make you question everyone, even your gran. (Especially if your gran’s played by Sam Neill.)

Speaking of Neill, he shows up as Paul Souter, Yosemite’s long-time chief ranger, who looks like the picture of wholesome family values. But based on the trailer? Yeah, we’re betting there’s something shady under that khaki uniform. Add Rosemary DeWitt into the mix as Turner’s ex-wife Jill Bodwin, and you’ve got a tangle of relationships, unresolved tension, and past trauma all bundled up in ranger hats and murder mysteries.

Part of the fun of shows like Untamed is the guessing game – Was that side-eye suspicious? Is the creepy violin music just dramatic flair or a flashing neon sign? Is everyone guilty until proven innocent? You’ll just have to binge and find out.

All six episodes drop on July 17, so mark your calendar and cancel your plans.

Until then, you can get in the mood with Ozark (all four seasons on Netflix), catch up on Yellowstone (streaming on Peacock), or dive into the creators’ past projects – American Primaeval on Netflix and The Marsh King’s Daughter on Hulu.

Let the armchair sleuthing begin.
