For the past 23 years, there has been a fatwā (Islamic death sentence) hanging over Salman Rushdie. The famous author of the “Satanic Verses”, is now also the subject of a new computer game aimed at teaching kids about his “sin”. Today is Dale Steyn’s 29th birthday, so, on that note, happy birthday from the Vibe, Dale! We dig your vibe. Recently, Dale got together with Warwick “Wok” Wright to do a crossover of their sports. Wok is a professional surfer, and Dale is, well, arguably the best fast bowler in the world. Watch them take each other on at each other’s sports, after the jump.
Attention time geeks: a leap second has been scheduled for June 30, 2012. The month will be one second longer, to re-synchronize Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is based on an atomic clock, and Universal Time (UT) which is based on the earth’s rotation. Basically it’s a cool moment where your clock will legitimately read 23:59:60.
Last week, on the IanF Show on 2oceansVibe Radio, Spike and IanF ate chilli because they needed something to keep them warm during Winter Week! Winter Week nestled perfectly around the winter solstice, which was on Friday, the shortest day, and the longest night – yuck! What better way to keep warm than with a […]
America’s gay hating public have called for a boycott after cookie company Oreo posted a picture in support of Gay Pride on it’s website. I’d have thought it would have been the racists, seeing as an Oreo is all about vanilla sandwiched between two delicious pieces of chocolate wafer. Here’s what all the fuss was about.

The donation will help combat wildlife crimes like rhino poaching.
The Economist has surprised everybody by doing something fun, using the United Nations’ World Drug Report 2012 (released yesterday) to generate a map of the world’s heaviest weed users. The Pacific island of Palau wins easily, with nearly a quarter of people aged 15 to 64 having smoked pot in the past year. South Africa does okay, too.

Well, it opened and got some international attention since we introduced you to Rivonia’s finest new establishment. Step inside boet, but remember, what happens at Avastar stays at Avastar.

‘Robot and Frank’ stars Frank Langella as an old man forging an unlikely bond with his Peter Sarsgaard-voiced robot butler, which starts off as an odd-couple comedy and then turns into a heist film, because Langella used to be a jewel thief. It looks pretty great, and they loved it at Sundance. Take a look.
2oceansViber, Fred, got in contact with us recently about his stolen MacBook Pro, which was grabbed by a thief as Fred confronted him in his bedroom. The thief and the MacBook got away, but Dropbox remained installed. Imagine the surprise when pictures from his stolen Mac started appearing in his DropBox. They tell quite a story. Full (hilarious) gallery inside.
On Sunday night, England dropped out of Euro 2012 in a quarterfinal against Italy. After 120 minutes of play, without any score, the teams went into a penalty shootout which saw Ashley Cole and Ashley Young both miss their attempts. The issue of the construction of a luxury hotel development in the Kruger National Park was discussed at length on 2oceansVibe last year when the weighty issue of hotel development in the Kruger National Park became public knowledge. A tour operator in Nepal calling itself ‘ZipFlyer’ claims to run the world’s fastest zip-line, a 1.8km line that drops 600m, attaining speeds of 160 kmph. Honestly I’m not sure what kind of speeds zip-lines are supposed to be clocking so those numbers don’t mean much, but the helmetcamera bits in the video look insane. Have a look.
Yesterday Lonesome George, the last of the Pinta Island subspecies of the giant tortoise, died, marking the total extinction of his subspecies. It’s a sad day, as Lonesome George became a symbol of other species on the brink of extinction, and an ambassador for Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands.
More than a year after 2oceasnVibe first covered the story about South Africa’s only ski resort going under the hammer, the resort will finally be sold in a “no reserve” auction on July 12 this year. The European Commission is drawing pretty widespread condemnation for releasing a video — ostensibly aimed at getting girls into science — which pretty much depicts female scientists as sexy models in short skirts who hang around bunsen burners, giggling. Take a look at what lady scientists apparently look like in Europe after the jump.
