The Currie Cup is South Africa’s most venerable sporting tournament. With a rich history spanning 122, there has been more than enough time for victories to be savoured, for rivalries to be forged, and for countless bitter tears to be wept. It all comes from passion, the passion that the fans show for their team. […]
Travellers to next month’s Rugby World Cup may be pleased to discover that Air New Zealand has recently launched its ‘cuddle class’ seats. A redesign of the Boeing 777-300 now allows economy class travellers to lie flat for the first time on a long haul flight. A lovely idea, as long as you’re not very tall.
What’s wrong with this picture? Does he get bonus points if the kick is especially difficult? And by whose judgment? Are we talking Dan Carter difficult, or JP Pietersen difficult? Does he get extra statistical percentage points if slots a kick while blindfolded, under the influence of prescription pain medication, or with a backheel? Help […]
Vilnius is the capitol city of Lithuania – a place where they feel very strongly about cars wrongly parked in specifically allocated bicycle lanes. In this clip the city’s mayor, Arturas Zuokas, can be seen literally crushing an “illegally parked” luxurious blue Mercedes – with an armored vehicle!
Toyota and bicycle maker, Parlee have developed a bike that can read your mind. The Prius X Parlee changes gears by registering the cyclist’s brain waves, through the use of an experimental iPhone app and a fancy thought sensitive helmet.
Africa’s top surfer, and world #2 ranked surf athlete, Jordy Smith will be making a guest appearance on 2oceansVibe Radio‘s Morning Meeting at 10h00 on Monday morning. South African Rugby Union chief executive, Jurie Roux, was totally pissed off yesterday when the media asked him whether or not the Springboks are actually at some secret training camp, in preparation for the World Cup.
Today we received this harrowing report from San Francisco by a brave 2oceansViber. Before you continue, note that we indemnify ourselves from any angst or emotional complications that you may suffer as a result of reading the following letter.
Proteas pace bowler, Wayne Parnell, has converted from Christianity to Islam. And from reports he may well change his name to “Whallid”.
The Bench, 2oceansVibe Radio‘s popular weekly sports and lifestyle show, will be broadcasting live from Caveau in Newlands on Saturday as part of the build-up to the Springboks’ second Tri-Nations Test of the year against the All Blacks. One a debonair and clean cut playboy and the other not, Crispin “Chowgaps” Inglis and Howie Kahn […]
Earlier this week Seth told you about the “Give Respect, Get Respect” campaign in America. It seems four- and two-wheeled road users in the UK might also benefit from this message. After seeing a video of himself assaulting a cyclist on the internet, a motorist has now offered his apology, saying he is “severely embarrassed.”
Our literary correspondent, Bruce Manley, got his hands on Dan Retief’s incredibly popular book, The Springboks And The Holy Grail. Click through for a review of the book, and an interview of Dan by Ian F on 2oceansVibe Radio’s Ian F Show.
There was a fair amount of sport to watch this past weekend, but I was particularly looking forward to watching the closing rounds of the Billabong Pro surfing event that was on at J-Bay in the Eastern Cape. Jordy Smith had been surfing well and it looked like he could make the final. He did, and he won, again.
The Springboks can count themselves lucky that this was a massive weekend for news; a weekend which included an international terror event, the death of a user of massive quantities of drugs, and corruption allegations being lead against a certain J. Malema.
Local cyclists concerned about how some people treat them on the road, should take note of a new initiative launched overseas. The ‘Give Respect, Get Respect’ campaign in Philadelphia, is aimed at socially unacceptable behaviour – something we have been quite vocal about here at 2oceansvibe. The Give Respect, Get Respect campaign aimed at promoting […]
This is the latest Mastercard ad, running on New Zealand television at the moment – ahead of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Pretty cool that they talk about the 1995 World Cup without mentioning anything about food poisoning. Follow the link to check it out.
The Springboks customarily receive a flurry of questions from Australian media, and a warm welcome from South African expats, when landing in Sydney. Not so much yesterday, when they arrived at around 8pm local time to be greeted by green and gold wearing…crickets. “Where is everybody?” joked captain John Smit.
Michael Wolff is a very influential American journalist who has lately been doing a lot of television interviews. This makes sense, seeing as he wrote a biography of media mogul Rupert Murdoch two years ago, titled “The Man Who Owns the News”. But see what happens when the BBC wrongly introduces him live on air as Ben Walker, baseball editor for the Associated Press! Awkward.
Most pre-season preparation has begun for northern hemisphere football teams that will shortly start their new seasons. Coincidentally, Spanish soccer club Real Madrid are in Los Angeles to face LA Galaxy on Saturday. They decided to train on the UCLA campus in preparation for the match. And drive golf carts around, into someone, with perfect timing.
Yesterday we received this harrowing report from Europe by a brave 2oceansViber. Before you continue, note that we indemnify ourselves from any angst or emotional complications that you may suffer as a result of reading the following letter.
Moments after John Smit announced he would be leaving the Sharks and joining English club side Saracens for two seasons after the 2011 World Cup, well-known author and rugby pundit, Dan Retief weighed in with his opinion on Twitter. Smit replied, with a perfectly weighted volley of wit. Check out the tweets after the jump.
Last week, an American firefighter, Shannon Stone, attempted a crowd baseball catch, lost his footing and fell 6m. He later died from his injuries. On the very same day of his funeral another fan fell at a game in exactly the same way. But this story had a better ending as he was caught by fellow spectators just in time, and survived.
As The Rugby World Cup draws near, an important part of the psychological preparation of any team is knowing that their nation is behind them. And what could be an easier way of showing your love and support in this age of pressurised, desk-bound work than with the combined tools of the the interwebs, and […]
“Ti amiamo, Armani” means (roughly): “We love you Armani, and your timeless style – and we need you to design our tracksuits for London 2012”. That’s what Italy’s Olympic Committee has arranged for the Azzurri for the Summer Olympics next year.
Flower selling in Adderley Street, Cape Town, is tradition in one of its purest forms. For some 100 years, man has always known he merely has to make a short drive into town, come rain or shine, to demonstrate old fashioned chivalry. Unfortunately, it appears an unused prawn lane is now hurting business, say the sellers.
A car covering the Tour de France, for a French television station, sideswiped Juan Antonio Flecha of Spain, while Dutch cyclist, Johnny Hoogerland, went flying into a barbed-wire fence at 60 kilometres per hour. Luckily he survived – albeit half-naked, as his pants were ripped off by the fence in the process. The maniac behind the wheel has now been banned by tour organisers.
Over the weekend, Shannon Stone, a firefighter, tried to catch a ball thrown into the stands during a game. What is normally great fun at these events, turned into a tragedy, as he lost his footing and plunged six meters to his death. What’s worse is that his young son can also be seen in the video and witnessed everything.
As a stormers fan, one can hardly be upset by last Saturday’s shellacking at The hands of New Zealand’s finest. For starters they were so vastly superior in every facet of the game that you could hardly hold it against them. They played rugby that was a joy to watch, they were infinitely more physical than us and they had an ingredient in spade loads that we seemed to lack, that is that “they started with the why”.
After what seems like an eternity, my good friend Mikhail will finally have to stop bitching about the fact that Sharks forward, Jean Deysel, has been left out of the Springbok squad.
You know how sometimes football players take off their shirts after the game and swop them with other players or fans? That happens at the FIFA Woman’s World Cup too. The only difference is that when it happens there, former pin-up models, like Josefine Öqvist, are the ones stripping down…
