Did you know that our ruling party just dropped their new album?  It’s all part of their local elections campaign, and it’s totally awesome.  No, really, forget the new Radiohead or Lady Gaga, this is what you should be listening to right now…

Some of the ANC’s biggest names acted as the albums executive producers, and they were apparently very stringent.  For example, when a top music producer, Arthur Mafokate, presented 30 songs to party leaders Jeff Radebe, Jackson Mthembu and Fikile Mbalula, they threw out 25 of them.  And you thought making propaganda was easy!

The album features contributions by Khanyi Mbau, Oskido, Spikiri as well as Chomee and has a little something for everyone, covering genres like hip-hop, kwaito, gospel and house. Unfortunately, no ‘Msheli Wami’ or ‘Shoot the Boer’ remixes, but from the sounds of it we’re all in for a musical treat.

I don’t have a song for you, but I do have the next best thing, a transcribed version of the lead single.  It’s titled ‘Together We Can (Build Better Communities)’.  See what they did there with the parenthesis?

So without further ado, here it is…

    Verse 1

Bengihlala emkhukhwini (I once lived in a shack)

Kodwa manje senginendlu (But now I have a house)

Ngenxa ye-ANC (Thanks to the ANC)

Bengiphuza amanzi emfuleni (I drank water from a river)

Kodwa manje senginempompi (But now I have a tap)

Ngenxa ye-ANC (Thanks to the ANC)

    Verse 2

Ne ke tsamaya mo sekgweng (I used to walk in a jungle)

Jwanong ke tsamaya mommileng (Now I’m walking on a paved road)

Ka baka la ANC (Because of the ANC)

Ne ke hloka mosebetsi (I was unemployed)

Hona jwale ke a sebetsa (Now I’m working)

Ka baka la ANC (Because of the ANC)

    Chorus

    Together we can build

    (Ek gaan met my ANC)

    Together we can build

    (Vir ‘n beter lewe)

    Dis my ANC

    Better communities

(Ek is lief vir my ANC).

Who needs a stable government when they’re turning out instant classics like this?

But seriously, you know what I love about these lyrics, they’re like so totally honest.  I mean, unemployment’s at an all time low, everyone has running water, and shacks are like so yesterdays news.  Thanks ANC, you’re the best.
