When I was about seven or eight all I knew of William Shatner was that he was the voice of “Rescue 911”. In my ignorance I didn’t know that he was the first captain of the Enterprise, nor did I know he would one day become everyone’s favourite misogynist, Denny Crane, on “Boston Legal”.
Before my very eyes, an always 60-year-old Shatner now celebrates his 80th birthday. I am filled with mixed emotions. Firstly, as he has aged, I have become a person who can no longer tolerate, let alone enjoy Rescue 911. But the older he gets the more “Shatner” he becomes, until one day, like Carbon turned into a diamond, we will be left with the essence of purest Shatner, enough to supply the world’s energy needs into perpetuaity.
In mere years Shatner will be gone and, TV-wise, we will only be left with a few episodes of Star Trek, a terrible crime series he made in the 90’s and Denny Crane.
But there will always be a little piece of Shatner in all of us, even if it’s just a crappy accent.
Enjoy the video of his celebrity friends doing impersonations of him.
