Frans Steyn must be our best bet at fullback in New Zealand in what will probably be pretty iffy weather and with the sort of game we are likely to play. I was in Hamilton when his siege gun boot broke New Zealand hearts from 60 and 56 meters two years ago. He has an X factor that makes him the front runner.

Gio Aplon is electric. I also believe his best position is at the back, it certainly sees him involved in more counter-attacking opportunities. I would definitely take him as my back up to Steyn and might well start him on the wing if not at the back. What a joy to watch, a game breaker and a try scorer. Gio always beats the first tackler often leading to mismatches being created and he boxes well above his weight in defense. In fact, defense is a strength for him.

Patrick Lambie is a very real option at the back too. Great under the highball and very solid as a tackler, a real goal kicking option to boot, Pat Lambie began his Sharks career at fullback and is gifted enough to shine in that position if needed… In my opinion, all 3 of the above are infinitely better options than Zane Kirshner who is a great tackler with a decent boot, but who doesn’t offer us much on attack.

Although i wouldn’t select them, others who deserve a mention are Riaan Viljoen, who has shown great touches and a prolific boot for the Cheetahs. And I really like the flair of both Louis Luddik for the Sharks and Jaco Taute of the Lions, the latter who has a huge future. All in all if we take Butch and Morne Steyn at 10 and Gio and Fransie at 15 (with Lambie in the squad as floating back line cover), we are in great nick.

On the wings we would almost definitely go with Habanna, JP Pieterson and Bjorn Basson. I don’t think we need a 4th wing as our reserve scrumhalf and the aforementioned Aplon fill that gap very well indeed.

But don’t accept my view on it, who would you select as our 5 or 6 back-three options come September? Should Lwazi Mvovo get a look in for example? What about Odwa Ndungane? Is there anyone else out there with their hand up?
