Gareth Newham, head of the crime and justice programme at the Institute for Security Studies, is claiming that the increase in drug-related crimes, possession of illegal firearms and drunk driving are a good thing. According to him it doesn’t mean more crime it, means more criminals being arrested. A spokesperson from ‘Fake It ‘til You Make It SA’ had this to say: ‘stop talking kak.’
Newham, was speaking in Pretoria after the release of South Africa’s annual crime statistics, which saw drug-related crime increase by 10.2% from April 2010 to March 2011. According to police head of crime research and statistics Chris de Kock, the number of crimes recorded in this category has actually doubled in the last eight to nine years.
Newham’s logic is this:
As of 2003 some 70 000 police posts have been created, meaning that the increase in arrests indicate a higher success rate for police.
He also said that, “Police themselves celebrate these increases.” (I’ll bet they do, those BP polisie-koffie parties are never a disappointment.)
It sounds convincing, except that it probably just means that, wait for it… there are more criminals! Or, more people committing crimes, and they’re only starting to catch on.
Granted, there have been more drunken driving arrests, although the relaxed attitude of the police in the past has made it ‘ok’ to do so, which means that there are probably just more drunk drivers on the roads.
Arrive alive chinas.
