Many of us are still really, really naughty about making phone calls and texting while driving. This despite the obviously dangerous distraction of cellphone usage behind the wheel. New reports show there has been a spike in the number of cellphone-related road accidents in South Africa recently – surprising, given how vigorously authorities are trying to clamp down on dangerous driving.
In Durban, more than a thousand fines have been handed out to motorists caught using their cellphones while driving since January.
Meanwhile in Cape Town, traffic officials are considering actually seizing mobile phones on the spot in instances of three cellphone-related offences. Which just might be the most ingenious deterrent out there.
Research has shown that you’re up to four times more likely to have an accident when you’re driving and using your phone simultaneously. And losing your phone to the cops? Devastating.
