But the miners he left jobless at Aurora mines will not get a cent from him. The embarrassment for the Zuma and Mandela family names continues as Zondwa Mandela’s assets are expected to be attached next. Mandela has been charged with fraud, too.

Trade union Solidarity’s Gideon du Plesis, was pleased:

We are happy that the directors will finally pay for their sins but the money will only go to Protea Coin.

We are currently putting a lot of pressure on the liquidators to fast-track civil charges against the directors.

Gift of the Givers charity have been doing what they can to support the miners and their families, and chairman, Imtiaz Sooliman, said the charity would feed the workers until their salaries were paid:

We cannot just walk away but we cannot feed them forever. We are hoping that they find a solution fast.

The latest instalment in the Aurora scandal stems from Security company, Protea Coin.

Protea won a court order in January this year that obligated Khulubuse Zuma to pay over R10 million to the company.

Protea had earlier launched a liquidation application against Aurora Empowerment Systems in May 2010, but a settlement was reached that meant Aurora undertook to pay Protea in instalments.

Aurora failed to uphold the agreement and, in October 2010, Zuma was forced to stand surety for the debts until Protea was granted a default judgment in January.

President Jacob Zuma’s nephew then had his assets attached, and three of his BMWs, furniture, and appliances were confiscated from his home in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal.

These will all be auctioned on Monday.

Zondwa Mandela, Zuma’s partner at Aurora, had also signed surety for the debt.

It’s now expected he will have his assets attached next.
