CISPA – the ugly cousin of other internet-crippling bills SOPA and PIPA, whether Facebook admits it or not – passed late last week in the GOP-controlled House of Representatives. Worse, the bill was amended before it passed to allow even more types of private information to be tapped and shared by government agencies in the US.
And, since the internet doesn’t exist exclusively in America, this affects web-users everywhere else too.
If the bill passes through Senate, government agencies could pull private information on such vaguely defined terms as “cybersecurity crimes,” “protection of individuals from the danger of death or serious bodily harm,” and in cases that involve “the protection of minors from exploitation.”
Basically these guys are getting carte blanche to read through and censor your stuff because that’s apparently how to fix the internet.
Fortunately the Senate is Democrat-controlled, and will have a tougher time passing there – and if it does, President Obama has threatened a veto.
