For as long as the internet has been around, memes have also existed. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to create a meme truly worthy of the world “viral”.

One example of 2012’s meme successes is the unhappy looking guy above. His real name is Keke, but his big and sad saucer blue eyes – along with that permanent scowl – has earned him the internet name of Grumpy Cat.

The guys over at Wired have sifted through all the noise from the past year, and have compiled a definitive list of the past year’s best memes. Some of the more memorable ones came out of the recent US election cycle, and include’s Hilary Clinton’s Binders Full of Women, Nate Silver Facts, and Texts From Hillary. Thanks to the Olympics, we also now have a meme called McKayla Is Not Impressed.

And let’s not forget two of the biggest songs that just wouldn’t stop charting in 2012. After Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez performed the below lip-sync of Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Baby, almost everyone got on board as well.

And then there was Psy’s Gangnam Style. The video has clocked nearly ONE BILLION views on YouTube, and have also had its fair share of spin-off versions. Versions that stood out include Afrikaans heartthrob Dirk van der Westhuizen’s Supercool (Gangnam Style), as well as Korean artit Ai WeiWei’s censorship protest version, seen below:
