Clinton Shepherd, the Navy Pier’s operations manager, was not impressed when he found out that the longest ride on a ferris wheel belonged to California’s Santa Monica Pier and not the wheel’s birth place of Chicago.
In honour of bringing the ride back to its birth town, Shepherd challenged himself to beat the Guinness Record California holds – a 25-hour spin.Â
Shepherd ended up spending a crazy 48 hours, 8 minutes and 25 seconds spinning – basically doubling the time of the California record. But it doesn’t sound as boring as it seems. The gondola he was secluded to was kitted out with…wait for it… a big-screen TV, video games, James Bond and Batman marathons, and rivers of water and the classic Mountain Dew. Pretty much a stoners haven.
Now for those intimate questions – how did he…do his business?
Guinness kindly gave Shepherd a whole five minute break an hour – where he did what he needed to do. Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse that is on the same pier – brought the record breaker his kos throughout the duration of his ride.Â
A word from Shepherd himself:
It was a very overwhelming experience. Once I realized Navy Pier, my friends, my family and the city of Chicago had my back and wanted me to complete this, it became easy, I was thrilled and honored to be able to have all the love and support I did.
