The Daily Beast author Michael Keller investigated which words your iPhone will correct and those where no replacements are found. Their analysis showed that iPhones which are running the latest software will not provide a correction for these “provocative” words that are incorrectly spelled, even by one letter.
- abortion
- rape
- ammo
- bullet
- drunken
- drunkard
- abduct
- arouse
- Aryan
- murder
- virginity
- suicide
- marijuana
- pornography
- deflower
- bigot
- prostitute
If you incorrectly spell abortion with an “m” at the end it will simply tell you “No Replacements Found”. The Daily Beast’s analysis also found more than 14,000 words that when spelled correctly are fine, but even the slightest misspelling will not be corrected. For example “sempstress”.
A lot of people rely on their autocorrect to make typing more simple.
But as more and more of our speech passes through mobile devices, how often is software coming between us and the words we want to use?
On Apple devices if you misspell a word, that word will be underlined in red. You simply tap on the word and appropriate suggestions appear from which you can choose the word you were intending to use. This is what happens for most misspelled words, except for those words in bullet form above.
Jillian York the director for international freedom of expression at the Electronic Frontier Foundation said:
I hate to say it, but I don’t think this should surprise anyone. Apple is one of the most censorious companies out there.
