Nobody likes a hangover. But never fear! Science is here and they’ve found the ultimate cure – drum roll please. It’s Sprite.

(Sorry this info didn’t come a couple days earlier – you Rocking the Daisies people might’ve needed it.)

For years people have been arguing over what the essential remedy is for a big night out; whether it’s a strong cup of coffee, a breakfast of champions, herbal tea, hair of the dog or the classic trio of Butlers, Coke and Playstation. Turns out, fizzy pop drinks are the way to go. A team of Chinese scientists have done tests on 57 different drinks and Sprite has come out the winner of the reliever of the alcohol induced illness.

    Here comes the science stuff:

Our livers release an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), which breaks down the ethanol in alcohol into a chemical called acetaldehyde. This is then broken down into a chemical called acetate – which is linked to some health benefits of alcohol – by an enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH).

The key to alleviating the damaging effects of alcohol is reducing the time that acetaldehyde is in the body, they concluded.

Some drinks, including a herbal tea made from hemp seeds, increased the length of the ADH process, and inhibited the ALDH process, tests showed, whereas Sprite was amongst the drinks which sped up the first process, therefore reducing the damaging effects of the alcohol.

So next time you’re going large on a night out – grab yourself a Sprite to wake up to – you won’t regret it.
