Many a planned party or event has suffered the wrath of ill weather. Meteorologists’ long-term predictions of weather patterns have until now been no better than flipping a coin. Finally – British scientists have announced that they have developed the world’s best long-term forecasting model.
Forecasting weather months in advance has stumped even the best super-computers. But with this new model, British scientists claim they can currently predict weather up to three months in advance – for winters at least – at 62% accuracy.
The model achieved this result when it was tested on 20 years of retrospective data. They estimate that the model’s accuracy will improve to 80%.
