Since its March debut at the Geneva International Motor Show, Apple’s CarPlay has been the talk of the town. On Wednesday the public got their first chance to experience Apple’s highly anticipated in-car system.
At the New York International Auto Show, Volvo and Apple had a demo of the CarPlay on display for the public test. Although the CarPlay was not mounted in a car, it still showed how it would integrate with a car’s hardware and software.
The touchscreen and application-launch actions on the CarPlay demo unit were fast and smooth, similar to an iPhone. Users who are familiar with using an iPhone or iPad will feel right at home with using the CarPlay.
As previously reported, the CarPlay comes with a hands-free Siri voice integration, and it worked as advertised. Accessing Apple Maps, messages, phone calls or music is simply a voice command away. When asking Siri directions to a location, several routes are displayed for you to choose from. Select one and you are given turn-by-turn route information and option for a 3D-buildings map on the Apple Maps app.
