Finland, to a whole lot of people, is a lot like Middle Earth: you know it’s there, you’re aware of some of the ins and outs but really, you don’t know that much.

In fact, you’ll probably find a whole lot more people know the weird and wacky of Middle Earth than they do Finland.

However, if FRANK.NET are giving away a trip to Finland to a lucky winner, we need to recognise just what they will be getting.

Of course, first, we all know that Finland is the place where one is least likely to die (very safe, basically) but here are a few more weird, wacky and amazing bits and pieces about Finland.

    1. There are no payphones in Finland.
    2. Finland holds world championships for such things as wife carrying, mobile phone throwing and mosquito catching.
    3. In Finland, there are days when the sun never sets. Conversely and somewhat terrifyingly, there are day when the sun never comes up. 30 Days of Night, anyone?
    4. Finland is the only country in the world that broadcasts news in Latin. The jury is still out on why.
    5. There are 1.8 million saunas in Finland.
    6. There is a heavy metal band for children in Finland. No lies – the band’s name is Hevisaurus.
    7. There is an International Day of Failure in Finland. This is not an invitation to deliberately bail off your skateboard, though.
    8. They discovered a 5000 year old piece of chewing gum in Finland. You’re forgiven for just notching that one up to ‘life experience’.
    9. Finland is basically a lake. There are 187 888 lakes larger than 500m2. Basically a lake.
    10. As if you needed more motivation, there is soon to be an Angry Birds theme park in Finland. Basically, we’re done here.

And really, an igloo hotel? In Finland.

Yes – that’s an actual igloo hotel..

    Need I say more?

Keen for a piece of that Finland action?
