Buying cars has become something of an art-form. You need to know how to make the most of the services various dealerships offer and how to avoid being caught in honey traps that end up being just too good to be true.
Buying the new car is one thing, but getting the most out of your well-loved current ride takes skill and research. Because we know you are very busy, we have done a little research for you.
There are two main options as to what to do with your pride and joy: sell it, or keep it as a backup for your younger siblings. Selling it is by far the most sensible option. While private sales will get you a bit more bang for your buck, you have the HUGE schlep attached to ensuring the post-sale details are all sorted out and smoothed over. If you are a pro-salesman, you could go for this, but we wouldn’t.
By far a better bet is taking advantage of trading assistance that many dealerships offer. This is slightly different to trade-in assistance, as it is usually at the sole discretion of the dealer on how they want to use this ‘discount’. What this means for you is that you could trade-in your old car and on top of the trade-in value, be paid trading assistance – effectively a BIG discount on your new car. What trading assistance means is that they cannot show a discount on the new car on a quotation, apparently this causes issues with other dealerships competing for the same business. So they trade-in your old car at a higher value which kinda has the same effect as a discount.
There are some really big offers around at the moment which effectively knock the price of a new car down to something pretty affordable. MINI, for example, is offering R40 000 trading assistance on their Cooper S Countryman. That is a little more than a 10% discount as well as a hassle free sale of your old car.
Of course, if you are simply too attached to your vehicle in spite of the threadbare seats and constant backfiring, you could keep it as a monument to your past self… and still get the trading assistance.
