A new app called Sketchy was revealed recently, which highlights areas known to be “dangerous” or, as the name implies, “sketchy”, but the app has now been called “racist” by a number of internet users.
Why? Because the internet is full of idiots.
The app creators, SketchFactor, took to their blog to set the record straight about their intentions and the app’s purpose.
“Who we’re not: racists, bigots, sexists. Any discriminatory posts will be deleted,”
“The app is not built for us as young, white people. As far as we’re concerned, racial profiling is ‘sketchy’ and we are trying to empower users to report incidents of racism against them and define their own experience of the streets,” said Allison McGuire, one of the creators behind the app.
McGuire added that the app is meant to give a heads-up and help generate a community to help identify spots where people are harassed, for whatever reason – something she dealt with commonly while growing up in the streets of Washington DC.
