One of the world’s greatest mysteries is Stonehenge, but thanks to some new mapping technology, we’re able to learn a little more about the obscure rock structure.

An interesting discovery is that Stonehenge did not stand alone, and was only part of a much larger construction.

The digital mapping has shown that previously unknown monuments surrounding Stonehenge, including burial mounds, massive pits and various shrines, exist below the surface.

“Stonehenge may never be the same again”, Vince Gaffney, the project’s lead researcher said in a statement. “This project has revealed that the area around Stonehenge is teeming with previously unseen archaeology.”

We can interpret the structures in a sense as small shrines or chapels — Stonehenge being like the cathedral, in relative terms. Suddenly, we are looking at a landscape with lots of small shrines, suggesting the area was full of activity, and Stonehenge becomes a different monument.
