Across the globe there are some funky eating habits on show. Haggis anyone? Ever told a foreigner what boerie is and watched their faces recoil? We generally draw the line at eating critically endangered animals, but obviously not everyone got that memo.

Not content with gobbling up our precious rhino horn for a bigger boner, some of China’s senior security officials have been caught wolfing down a rather scarce giant salamander. A local newspaper caught wind of the planned feast and sent some journalists to investigate. This from the BBC:

A dinner guest later confirmed with the paper that they were served a giant salamander which the host had brought for the party.

I’m sure there was plenty to go around, with the Chinese giant salamander reaching lengths of up to almost 1,8 metres. They are listed as a critically endangered species and are a protected wildlife species.

Guests at the party didn’t react too well when they found out that the journalists were lining up a scoop. The BBC again:

The journalists were allegedly beaten up and throttled, and their equipment and phones were stolen.

Really guys, is there no respect for our fellow creatures of the earth? We await news of lavish banquets where pandas get served up any day now.
