I haven’t even read about the app yet and it’s already downloaded on my iPhone, because this is one of the happiest moments of my Instagram life: a collage app! Made by Instagram. Not by some weird other app company. Rejoice!
I give you Layout from Instagram.
Right, let’s see how it works, shall we?
You can choose between two and nine images (well, any less than two and it wouldn’t be a collage now, would it?) and then the app sorts them into ten different collage layouts, which you can then choose from. Once you have chosen your collage layout you can move the images around, or flip them upside down or mirror them.
Once you’re satisfied, save the collage and you can then open it in Instagram (directly from Layout) and Valencia/Crema/Perpetua it to death and post it.
Why has Instagram created their own collage app?
According to Instagram, one in five active users — at least 60 million people — already use third-party mobile apps like Diptic, Moldiv and Stitch to make collages. Simply put, a standalone collage app keeps users engaged with Instagram features and services for longer periods of time. It also lowers the odds of Instagram users checking out photo apps from competitors.
And why has Instagram not just added the collage option into the original Instagram app?
“We really wanted to keep the main Instagram flow simple, and adding a bunch of these features would probably make it more complicated,” Joshua Dickens, an Instagram product designer.
They did the same thing with Hyperlapse, just as Facebook has done with Messenger.
YAY more apps to sort through on your screens.
It’s currently only available for Apple, with the Android app set to arrive in a few months.
