  • Take That Google: Apple Watch Outsells Android’s Yearly Sales In A Single Day

We know we tell you an awful lot about the Apple Watch but that’s only because it is big, big news across the world. The buzz had been growing at a rapid rate ahead of last Friday’s opening day for pre-orders and the numbers did not disappoint.

Anyone with a knowledge of Apple customers’ brand loyalty (‘Sheeple?’) knew that the numbers would be solid, but the fact that Apple’s pre-orders exceeded in one single day the number of Android Wear smartwatches sold in an entire year is sure to leave egg on the face of many at Google. These numbes from Business Insider:

In 2014, all manufacturers using Google’s smartwatch operating system — including Motorola, LG, and Samsung — sold 720,000 units.

In contrast, Apple sold an estimated 957,000 Apple Watches on the first day the devices were available for preorder.

It isn’t all doom and gloom for Google, however. Last year Android manufacturers managed to ship an incredible one billion smartphones, whereas Apple could only boast just under 193 million.

The success of the Apple Watch opening day sales is perhaps best measured against the successes of their previous products. This from Mashable:

It took Apple 74 days to sell one million iPhones and 28 days to sell one million iPads…

The most recent survey from Raymond James, a financial services firm, suggests that 5% of iPhone users intend to buy a watch, which would be about 20 million watches.

20 million watches? That’s an awful amount of pomposity strolling the streets. Then again, using the word ‘pomposity’ is cause for concern so we’ll call it a draw.
