I always thought it was robot humans that would one day rule the world, but it seems it is in fact drones that are slowly taking over every facet of our lives whether we like it or not.

Online retail giants Amazon recently had some dealings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office, in particular patenting the use of drones for package delivery. The big news to come out of it all? Delivering to your home or work is so old school, how about delivery to exactly where you are at that moment? Here’s CNN:

The patent application describes a customer option called “Bring It To Me.” With this option, using GPS data from the consumer’s mobile device, the drone locates and delivers the item to that location. Once the customer places the order he or she does not have to remain in one place…

As the ordered item is retrieved from inventory, the current location of the user’s mobile device may be determined and the delivery location correspondingly updated. As such, the ordered item will be delivered to the user while the user is at their friend’s house, or any other location.

The drones will have elaborate safety mechanisms in place, both to avoid other drones and steer clear of humans, animals and vehicles. The delivery system is still some time off being implemented in the US, but I imagine there are already a number of people working on how they can tempt unsuspecting drones into their homes.
