We play a plethora of silly games when we are young. Once we have upgraded from hide and seek and kissing catches, it’s on to bigger things, like Red Rover and getting a group of you to try lift your friend with just your fingers a la The Craft. The things we do. You’ll probably remember having to play Glassy-Glassy at a birthday sleepover and then not getting any sleep at all.

Well guys, there’s a new game to play now. It’s called “Charlie Charlie” and is supposed to have its roots in Mexican history. It’s also currently doing the rounds on Twitter, so have a lookout for #CharlieCharlieChallenge.

The riveting game “involves summoning a supposed Mexican demon by placing two pencils in the form of a cross on a piece of paper and writing “Yes” and “No” in the alternating squares. Players then ask, “Charlie, Charlie, are you here?” The pencils should then move… (but that’s probably gravity.)

But don’t think you’re going to be summoning the Mexican departed. According to BBC reporter Maria Elena Navez, it’s very unlikely Huitzilopochtli or Malinalxochitl are going to come sauntering through your dining room.

There’s no demon known as “Charlie” in Mexican mythology… gods in old-time Mexican myths would have had names like Tlaltecuhtli or Tezcatlipoca.

Thus Charlie is probably no one and will probably not communicate with anyone dead.
