    Earlier today we brought you the story of a Nigerian man attending the AU summit in Johannesburg, unfortunate enough to be fleeced by fake police officers pretending to be from his home country. There’s not much you can do about that, but if you’re falling for this Coca-Cola scam you may need to wisen up.

    The soft-drink company has issued a warning after a scam that is doing the rounds in South Africa has become more frequent. Here’s TimesLive:

    “There have been reports recently of fraudulent e-mails to consumers notifying them they have won money in a UK Coca-Cola lottery. One such case that is currently being investigated is a Western Cape man who lost over R119 000 as a result of the scam,” Public Affairs and Corporate Communications Manager at PenBev, Denise Behrens said in a statement.

    This is what the fraudulent email is said to contain:

    The scam tries to get people to part with their banking and ID details. Coca-Cola released this advice for those wanting to know whether or not they had entered a bogus competition:

    PenBev and Coca-Cola contact their winners telephonically to notify them of their winnings, never via SMS or e-mail.

    PenBev and Coca-Cola would never ask for any fees to be paid for winners to receive the prize, such as Legal fees, admin fees, clearance fees, delivery fees, packaging fees etc. as this is given free of charge.

    If customers haven’t entered a competition, then Coca-Cola would not contact them.

    I think that last one rings particularly true. Tata ma chance…
