  • Let’s Get Real: Help Include Load Shedding On The New Cape Town Official Monopoly Board Game

By now you would have heard about Cape Town getting its very own Monopoly. I know. It’s about time, but also it was to be expected (don’t forget, Cape Town was included in the new Monopoly world edition, in honour of the game’s 80th anniversary). Obviously that wasn’t enough for the greatness that is The Mother City, though.

The good news is that the Monopoly-makers are calling for the general public to get involved.

Calls are being made for the public to submit ideas about how the chance and community chest cards will function, as well as which landmarks and attractions should be included.

Sure, go ahead. Throw in the Waterfront, Kirstenbosch, Caprice…

But what we also need to think about is re-issuing the “jail” issue. Pollsmoor is right next to Steenberg. Rather, “jail” should be replaced with “lights out”. It would be unrealistic to exclude the biggest part of any Capetonians (and indeed South African’s) life – load shedding.

So, instead of “go directly to jail”, it should rather say “lights out” – you’ve got load shedding and are in the dark and you miss your turn for the next round.

Dan Taylor, Head of Monopoly, has said that “Cape Town has long been on our list of regional MONOPOLY targets, and when we had the Mother City included on our anniversary edition, we knew this year was the one to bring Monopoly to Cape Town’s gorgeous shores”.

    About time.

You can submit your ideas to CapeTown@winningmoves.co.uk, and you should do it.
