If you’re one of the 6 000 people that has had your phone impounded by The City of Cape Town between July 1, 2012 and September 30, 2014, then you have until the end of November to get it back. At a discount of R550. After that, the price will once again increase to the usual fee of R1 100.
After that, The City will have its first auction of around 5oo phones confiscated from drivers. By law, the City can sell off any impounded property after three months.
There has however been a delay as the City had to wait for the relevant court processes to be completed. They also had to ensure that all personal data on the device could be cleared.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith is unsure that anyone even really cares about their impounded cell phone:
I am not sure whether anyone will take us up on the offer, but the cellphones will be disposed of either way. We are holding the auction and any devices not sold will be donated to a charity that can use them for their fieldworkers or activists.
You probably already have a new phone, so rather look into buying a new tablet for under R800.
