It’s all eyes on Brazil at the moment as Rio readies itself to host the 2016 Olympics, although we’ve already seen some serious cracks appear.
There was New Zealand’s Jason Lee, competing in jiu-jitsu, who was ‘kidnapped’ last week, and there was the failure of the Olympic Village to be ready for the Australian athletes, but another story making headlines was the kidnapping of Aparecida Schunck.
That would be the mother-in-law of F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone [pictured above with wife Fabiana Flosi], kidnappers demanding a ransom of $36,5 million (R506 million) for her safe return.
Pretty small change for Bernie, valued at around R43 billion, but things didn’t really go to plan for the criminals. This from TIME:
Aparecida Schunck was released unharmed after a police raid in which two of the suspected kidnappers were arrested, the BBC reports. None of the $36.5 million ransom demanded was paid.
More here from Sky:
Media in Brazil reported that the kidnappers had demanded the ransom in pounds, with the cash divided into four bags…
“She is in good health (and) two people have been arrested,” the head of the Sao Paolo police, Elisabete Sato, said.
67-year-old Schunck is the mother of 38-year-old Flosi, who married 85-year-old Bernie back in 2012.
