The humble van Niekerk clinched Team South Africa’s first gold medal in a time of 43.03, smashing Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old record in the process.

When the fastest man the world has ever seen is shocked you know you’ve done OK. Bolt even took the time to seek Wayde out after the 100m final, the two embracing in what is a real show of respect.
