Another day, and still no motive.
Yesterday we saw pictures from inside the hotel room where Stephen Paddock carried out his rampage (HERE), although there was no mention of a note.
Overnight a number of news outlets have spoken about a note, mostly off the back of this picture:
The Mirror with the guessing game:
A mystery piece of paper has been spotted next to the Las Vegas shooter’s dead body in a leaked police picture…
A possible note was seen weighted down by a tape roll on a table. Police have not confirmed if they have found a suicide note as part of their investigation.
Much of the same at NewsAU:
Pictures from the scene show the 64-year-old’s body next to his weapons and spent ammunition. On the table next to him is what appears to be a note, written on pink paper.
While the existence of a note and its potential contents are yet to be confirmed by police, hotel staff have revealed the retired accountant kept a “Do Not Disturb” sign on his room for days before carrying out the massacre.
Not sure how the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign relates to that note but hey…
They do have this info too:
…a security source told Fairfax, it was a breach of policy not to check on the guest after 24 hours of such a sign being displayed. Paddock also reportedly asked for an upgraded room for a “better view”.
“There were a number of missed opportunities by the hotel,” the official said. “These things in isolation don’t seem much but when you put them all together, they raise serious suspicions.”
It’s also been revealed Paddock had stayed at the hotel three times before, raising the possibility he had been planning for the attack.
Hindsight is 20/20, because for now it seems that no one close to him knew what was coming. In case you missed it yesterday, it’s worth revisiting his brother’s bizarre, emotional interview HERE.
We’ll finish with the Guardian outlining how the FBI isn’t all that impressed with Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo:
Lombardo had previously said law enforcement believed Paddock had perpetrated “a solo act”. But on Wednesday, he appeared to change his position. His speculation about the possibility Paddock was aided came after an exchange in which he conceded investigators had not been able to identify any “person of interest” other than Danley.
He said investigators were, however, pressing to find others who may have been involved. It was possible that Paddock was “a super guy” who was “working out all of this on his own”, Lombardo said. But he added: “It would be hard for me to believe that.”
The comment appeared to earn a veiled rebuke from the agent overseeing the FBI’s investigation.
“Theories are great and everyone can have a theory,” said Aaron Rouse, who runs the bureau’s Las Vegas division, and took to the lectern immediately after the sheriff’s comments. “But I need to deal with facts. The sheriff needs to deal with facts.” He added: “He’s not going to make assumptions. I’m not going to make assumptions.”
Rouse said the FBI was working with “a number of theories”, but was not prepared to publicize [sic] them.
And now we wait.
