Let’s face it: Cape Town is experiencing the worst drought in recent history.

It’s a topic that’s been on everybody’s lips – locally and internationally – for months, and many people still can’t believe that the coastal metropolis might be the first major city in the world to run out of water.

Meanwhile, its residents are fearing the arrival of Day Zero, when the taps will be switched off and everyone will queue up for a daily ration of 25 litres per day.

    Jislaaik. Scary, hey?

Of course, Capetonians are breaking out all sorts of water-saving strategies like skipping shower days, ditching car washes and collecting grey water to flush the toilets among other smart tactics, explains Getaway Magazine:

Through this effort, Day Zero has been pushed out to 2019, but Cape Town isn’t in the clear yet. Water restrictions are still in full force, with daily limits of 50 litres per person, water-saving needs to be maintained and there is still more to be done.

For Capetonians, it’s aggravating knowing that they can’t perform simple tasks like washing their cars or treating themselves to baths or showers on full blast, without feeling like they’re wasting water.

Luckily, MINI has stepped up to the plate and found a solution. Partnering with Getaway, they’ve created ‘Water-Smart Getaways’, an initiative aimed at helping Capetonians save water whilst enjoying guilt-free, water-based luxuries.

This is how it works: MINI Water-Smart Getaways are situated in ‘water safe zones’ outside of Cape Town.

Packaged specially for individuals’ preferences, some of the Getaways to choose from are: ‘10 Magnificent Hair-Washing Getaways,’ ‘7 Glorious Car-Washing Getaways,’ ‘12 Guilt-Free Laundry Load Getaways, and ‘10 Heavenly Bath-Soaking Getaways.’

They all sound refreshingly lekker, don’t you think?

And what better way to explore these fantabulous adventure spots than with the MINI Countryman:

Equipped with four-wheel drive and a ruggedly handsome design, the MINI Countryman is the ultimate all-rounder and will give you plenty of water-saving stories to tell.

Now that’s a car that I would want to drive to my aquatic paradise.

With each getaway, it “offers an estimation of how many litres each water-related ‘activity’ is saving the city”.

So if you’re booking a Water-Smart Getaway weekend for two people, you could save Cape Town around a whopping 770 litres of water. If hundreds more people got in on this initiative, think of the millions of bucket-loads of water they could be saving.

Not to mention the positive effects on the tourism industry: tourism in South Africa is estimated to be worth more than R400 billion, or about 9,3 percent of South Africa’s gross domestic product.

With MINI Water-Smart Getaways, you’re giving back to both the environment and the economy.

Day Zero, eat your heart out.
