Sergio Ramos isn’t the kind of chap who says sorry very often, and if you were looking for a contrite response from the Real Madrid captain this time around you’ll be sorely disappointed.
The news that Loris Karius suffered a concussion after a 48th-minute clash with Ramos was the talk of the football world (see the clash here), and given that he also tussled with Mo Salah, the Spanish defender was once again the centre of attention.
When quizzed by reporters about his reaction to the Karius news, though, he dropped a real zinger.
The Guardian reports:
“After that the goalkeeper said I dazed him with a clash, I am only missing Roberto Firmino saying he got a cold because a drop of my sweat landed on him,” he told Spanish newspaper AS.
Boom – shots fired.
He went on to comment on the Salah injury, saying the Egyptian also played a large role in the incident:
“Bloody hell, they have given this Salah thing a lot of attention. I didn’t want to speak because everything is magnified. I remember the play well: he grabs my arm first and I fell to the other side, the injury happened to the other arm and they said that I gave him a judo hold…
Ramos added: “I spoke with Salah through messages. He was quite good. He could have played on if he got an injection for the second half, I have done it sometimes but when Ramos does something like this, it sticks a little bit more.
“I don’t know if it is because you are at Madrid for so long and win for so long that people look at it a different way.”
Look as hard as you like and you won’t find an apology.
Sergio certainly won’t be getting a warm reception from English football fans at the upcoming World Cup, but given that England would need to advance beyond the group stages to meet Spain I’m not sure that matters.
