This Rom-Com About An Elusive Rockstar Might Actually Be Decent [Trailer]

It feels like it's been a while since a decent rom-com did the rounds, but perhaps this Chris O'Dowd, Rose Byrne and Ethan Hawke effort might hit the spot.

These days, a good rom-com is hard to come by.

Maybe that’s because the older you get, the more critical the lens through which you watch movies becomes, but I’m sure it also has to do with the fact that big studios are churning out mind-numbing garbage because that’s what gets bums on seats.

I’ll save the rant for another day, and rather focus on Juliet, Naked, which stars the always entertaining Chris O’Dowd and a few other familiar faces.

Via the Roadside Flix trailer:

Annie (Rose Byrne) is stuck in a long-term relationship with Duncan (Chris O’Dowd) – an obsessive fan of obscure rocker Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke). When the acoustic demo of Tucker’s hit record from 25 years ago surfaces, its release leads to a life-changing encounter with the elusive rocker himself. Based on the novel by Nick Hornby, Juliet, Naked is a comic account of life’s second chances.

Nick Hornby film adaptations have impressed in the past, so we live in hope.

Here’s the trailer:

I don’t think it’s going to rival High Fidelity, or Almost Famous, but Variety’s review offers hope:

“Juliet, Naked” is a gently winning romantic comedy, all keyed to a delightful note of indie-rock obsession…

O’Dowd, playing down his cheekiness, is better than he’s been in any movie since “Bridesmaids.” Hawke, just when you think you’ve got him pegged, keeps finding new flavors [sic] of disillusioned charisma. And Byrne, who has the trickiest role in the movie (she has to walk around wearing a pout of dissatisfaction), keeps us on her side by investing Annie with that most indelible of qualities: the innocence that lives on the other side of heartbreak. “Juliet, Naked” is a feel-good movie for the best of reasons. It leaves you completely happy you met the people in it.

Could well be worth a watch when it hits the big screen on August 17.
