Go on, then, you know you want the bragging rights.

US News & World Report has just released its 2019 Best Global Universities rankings, and included in that release is a list of South Africa’s 12 finest tertiary learning institutions.

I don’t know who made them the authority on this country’s universities, but here we are.

First of all, via BusinessTech, some background:

The overall rankings evaluate 1,250 universities across 75 countries and are the largest and most comprehensive assessment of research universities worldwide, it says…

The Best Global Universities methodology – which is based on Web of Science data and metrics provided by Clarivate Analytics InCites – weighs factors that measure a university’s global and regional research reputation and academic research performance.

For the overall rankings, this includes bibliometric indicators such as publications, citations and international collaboration. Each subject ranking has its own methodology based on academic research performance and reputation in that specific area.

Let’s check out those global rankings before we look at South Africa:

So this American study found that eight out of the top 10 universities in the world are in America? Not shocked.

    Anyway, here at home:

All of the locally placed universities improved their positions in 2018, except for UCT (losing a single place) and the University of KwaZulu Natal, which was unmoved.

    To the table we go:

There you go, UCT graduates – have a smug Thursday.
